According to Dutch publication GalaxyClub, Samsung renewed trademarks for all its smartphone lineups in its home country South Korea last month. We can see the renewed trademarks for the Galaxy S, Galaxy A, Galaxy M, and the Galaxy Z lineups. However, the Galaxy Note trademark is nowhere to be found. It isn’t exactly clear what that means. Maybe Samsung will renew the trademark in the coming months as the next Galaxy Note smartphone, if it ever comes, will not arrive until the second half of next year. But prima facie, it appears the Korean behemoth doesn’t have a long-term plan for the S Pen wielding phablet series. We may have already seen the last Galaxy Note phone, the Note 20 series last year. The introduction of S Pen support to the Galaxy S and Fold lineup this year is another indication that the Note series isn’t here to stay for long. That said, a missing trademark isn’t conclusive evidence that the Galaxy Note lineup will not return next year, or in the future. Samsung didn’t renew the Galaxy Tab trademark either. But we all know that the Korean firm isn’t discontinuing its tablet lineup, at least not next year. Even the head of Samsung’s mobile division, DJ Koh had hinted back in March that the company will launch a Galaxy Note smartphone in 2022. So nothing is set in stone yet. We will have to wait for more reports to emerge for confirmation.
Samsung is pitching the Fold series as the Note successor
The Galaxy Note series has been a huge success for Samsung. The lineup has built a strong userbase over the years. The Korean behemoth wouldn’t want to lose those customers. But with the arrival of the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, it now has several flagship lineups to look after. As such, the company is looking to discontinue the Note series and develop the Fold lineup as a credible replacement. Samsung has already introduced S Pen support to the Fold series. The latest Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also impressively durable for a foldable smartphone. It still may not be a like-for-like alternative for the Note series, not just because of the price but in terms of functionality as well, but the Fold series is becoming more appealing with each new generation. Time will tell if it can win the confidence of Galaxy Note fans in the future. Meanwhile, we will have to wait and see whether the Galaxy Note lineup will return next year.
