As you may already know, Nothing bought Essential, the company behind the Essential PH-1. Carl Pei said that the team really liked that name, but that they wanted to create their own legacy, hence use a brand new name.
Carl Pei had some help coming up with ‘Nothing’ company name
He did say that it was “really hard to find a new name” for the company. The team wanted something meaningful and unique. That’s where this rather interesting story begins. Carl Pei said that he was in the presence of his little sister when it happened, he was walking with her. He shared some of the names that the team had in mind with her, and she shared her feedback. During this interview, Carl Pei shared two names that were in consideration, ‘Stone’ and ‘Next’. His little sister commented on all the names he shared, and said that they were “cringe”. The company’s founder said that he was a bit upset during that conversation, as his sister thought the name were cringey. That’s when he suggested the ‘Nothing’ name, and got a positive reaction from his sister. That’s a really interesting story, as it seems like Carl Pei’s little sister actually helped him come to this name, quite a bit. I, personally, like the ‘Next’ name that was mentioned, but ‘Nothing’ is certainly unique as well.
