In a recent corporate filing, Samsung Foundry named Qualcomm alongside its sister firm Samsung Electronics, Apple, Best Buy, and Deutsche Telekom as its five biggest chip customers in the first quarter of 2022. The company didn’t reveal the size of the orders it received from these firms but according to a Yonhap News report, the five customers accounted for 14 percent of Samsung’s total sales this past quarter. Its Foundry division posted its highest quarterly sales during the first three months of the year....

The revelation comes from musicMagpie, a UK-based company that specializes in refurbished electronics. The report titled Annual Phone Depreciation Report 2021, further mentions that the average smartphone user in the UK changes their phone every 16 months. This causes a depreciation of around 50% on the original value, musicMagpie found. “The 10 phones which held the most of their value at 12 months are all iPhones – making them the better investment for people who are likely to trade their device back in every year to upgrade,” the report said (via)....

Ring wants more users to switch from Protect Basic to Protect Plus Meanwhile, the Protect Plus plan still costs $10/month or $100/year, which is the more appealing option for customers with two or three Ring devices. Part of the reason for bumping the price of the Protect Basic plan is to encourage more customers to use the Protect Plus plan (via The Verge). Previously, users could add up to three Ring devices (on three separate Basic plans) for only $90/year, rather than pay $100/year for the Protect Plus plan....

With RTL, Samsung offers developers access to its smartphones and smartwatches for remote testing of apps. The devices are connected to the cloud. Developers can select the device they want to test an app on and remotely install the APK file. They can then run the app to find bugs or compatibility issues. This would allow them to fine-tune the project before rolling it out publicly. Developers can select device language, take screenshots or make screen recordings, test automation scripts, and share screens with co-developers remotely....

The unions had last week requested the company for a meeting with its top executives. They were open to having a dialogue with any of Samsung’s co-CEOs, or even Vice Chairman and heir to Samsung Group Lee Jae-yong. If not agreed to, the workers threatened to go on strike for which they have already won the legal right. Samsung has now expectedly agreed to hold a discussion with the unions....

As Samsung notes, “the connected home has been very fragmented” and diverse. There are numerous players in this space and interoperability has been a major problem. There are products that only work with a certain system. This has led to confusion about whether a particular smart home device will be compatible with an existing ecosystem. Matter aims to solve this. All Matter-complaint devices that come out in the future will feature a Matter logo....

As of this writing, the Galaxy A52 is receiving the Android 12 update with One UI 4.0 in Russia. But it should be long before users in other countries get to taste the new One UI version.
