As of this writing, the first software update for the Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra is rolling out in a handful of countries in Asia and Africa, including Egypt, Afghanistan, and the UAE. The OTA (over the air) rollout should soon cross borders in other regions as well. If you’re one of the very few people globally currently holding a Galaxy S22 phone, you can be on the lookout for an update with firmware version S90xEXXU1AVB3 in the coming days....

As of this writing, the Galaxy Tab S6 is receiving the February update in Germany. The rollout should reach more European countries as well as other regions in the coming days. The latest update for the three-year-old Samsung tablet comes with the firmware version T865XXU5CVB1. Samsung’s official changelog for this update only mentions the February SMR and that’s probably it. We aren’t hopeful of the Galaxy Tab S6 receiving any new features with the latest software release....

The Smart Caddie app is useful for both golf professionals as well as amateur golf enthusiasts. It offers features like shot distance measurement and several other performance metrics. The app also provides detailed information on more than 40,000 golf courses worldwide. This includes the actual measurement of the hole, aerial photos of the golf course, and satellite maps. For golf courses in South Korea, Smart Caddie provides course elevation information as well....

Samsung Display, the Korean conglomerate’s display manufacturing arm, showcased Eco2 OLED Plus technology at the recently-concluded K-Display 2022 expo in South Korea (via). A demonstration by the company revealed the new display technology consumes 25 percent less power than the Eco2 OLED panel employed by the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Battery consumption goes down by 35 percent when compared to a similar-sized conventional OLED panel. The Eco2 OLED technology integrates the polarizer within the panel....

Over the years, Google has added, as well as removed, certain features from its Gboard app. In a recent development, as per a report by 9to5Google, the company has confirmed it will be scrapping one feature from Gboard. Notably, Google is planning to scrap the Bitmoji-like ‘Minis’ custom stickers from Gboard. Moreover, this removal process will happen in a not so distant future. FYI, the Minis stickers feature was introduced by Google for Gboard back in 2018....

Ahead of Canada Day today, Reddit user u/als26 received a notification from Google Assistant reminding them to turn off their alarm (via 9to5Google). “Tomorrow is Canada Day,” the notification is titled. “Tap to change your 9:30 alarm,” the follow-up text reads. Announced back in August 2019, Google originally planned to roll out Privacy Sandbox this year. A year ago, the company pushed back the deadline to the end of 2023 because it needed more time to get things right across the ecosystem. It turns out an extension of one year won’t be enough. The tech biggie is needing even more time to get the tech ready for prime time. According to Google, it released multiple trial versions of Privacy Sandbox over the past several months for developers to test and provide feedback....

According to the tweet, the Google Clock app will be getting a notable update pretty soon that will add some nice functionality to the app. The most notable new feature will be the ability to schedule alarms. When you set an alarm now, it’s set to either go off that day or on a certain day in the week that you indicate. However, there was never the option to set an alarm for a specific date later in the month....

The company is now accepting volunteers for Project Relate to contribute towards multi-year research with the goal of improving Google’s speech recognition algorithms. Google ultimately wants to make sure Assistant and the rest of its voice-based features are fully capable and inclusive of people with neurological conditions or speech impairments. “Project Relate is a continuation of years of research from both Google’s Speech and Research teams, made possible by over a million speech samples recorded by participants of our research effort,” Google said in a blog post (via)....

Google started using AI to predict floods in India back in 2018, and that program further expanded to Bangladesh in 2020. According to Google, it will now offer flood forecasts for river basins in another 18 countries. Those are Brazil, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Malawi, Guinea, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Namibia, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Angola and South Africa. The alerts go out to every Android phone user or any phone with the installed Google search app....

So what is this new dock for Google Maps and what, exactly, does it do? Of course, since the newly-spotted dock in Google Maps is still under testing, it isn’t rolling out to everybody. When you’re composing a message, you have the option to attach a photo. Well, when you tap the “add photo” button, you’ll see a photo picker with a tiled view. The first tile is actually a live viewfinder showing what your camera sees. You can quickly snap a photo and add it to your message. After doing that, your camera should shut down. However, that’s not the case. Because of this bug, Google Messages doesn’t close down the camera; it stays on in the background....
